St John Fisher College student, Debbie Sibona, has been selected to join the Australian Girls Choir (AGC).

Known most prominently for featuring in advertisements for Qantas and performances at the cricket, the AGC has named this year's as the toughest selection process they've experienced for a national tour to date.

Debbie said she was ecstatic when she heard the news that she would be one of just 58 members of the AGC heading to South Australia in September.

“I've been in the AGC since 2020 and this is my first tour; I've never really done anything like this before so I'm looking forward to what this experience gives me.

“Whilst my main goal is to become a doctor, I've always had artistic aspirations and it would be a dream to release a song one day.

In correspondence received from the AGC, a spokesperson said the selectors were very pleased to offer Debbie a place on the 2023 National Tour.

“The competition for a place was the toughest it's ever been, and this group promises to be of an extremely high standard…[and] will have a wonderful time travelling to South Australia."

Debbie said performing with the AGC is quite a unique experience for students of her age.

“One of my highlights from last year was performing at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference for Disaster Management," Debbie said.

“Getting to perform for such high-ranking officials from all different countries was a great experience - It was especially memorable to watch Annastacia Palaszczuk dance along with us when we performed 'Absolutely Everybody'."

St John Fisher College Acting Principal, Ms Britt Gurnett, said the college community was thrilled for Debbie and congratulates her on her achievement.

“Debbie is a member of our College Rock Band, an incredibly talented student and vocalist, and we are proud of her most recent success of securing a spot on the AGC National Tour," Ms Gurnett Said.

“We are fortunate to have a vibrant community at our college where students are encouraged to become fully involved in and celebrate every opportunity."

The National Tour will take place between Friday September 15 through to Wednesday September 27, 2023.
